Innovus Power grid-tied GridGenius Solutions
Today’s Challenge for Utility Grid-tied Solar and Wind Power
As renewable solar and wind power capacity has been added by many property owners to utility grids, these rate payers have had meaningful benefits, seeing their power costs reduced due to their investments. Depending on the geographic region, solar and wind capacity have already been saturated, or approaching saturation levels that can cause grid instability issues where renewable capacity cannot be fully utilized. These issues are triggering actions that reduce renewable capacity incentives and ultimately impair our path to achieve our CO2 reduction goals and further reduce our cost of power. Innovus GridGenius Renewable solutions can address this issue.
With the continuing decrease in the cost of solar power and stored energy, Innovus Power and our project development partners can offer commercial, industrial, and community power customers solar-stored energy systems that provide 90-100% green energy near or below current utility rates. In regions where power reliability is an issue, Innovus can enable back-up power to fill the gap inclusive of leveraging the renewable and stored energy resources already available.

The unique challenges of remote microgrids
In centralized utility scale grids spanning across thousands or even millions of customers, any single or small group of customer load demand changes have essentially no impact on power availability and quality of power. When groups of customers demonstrate similar load demand trends, their aggregate load demand changes gradually and often in predictable ways.
Unlike centralized utility scale grids, microgrids can range from 1 customer to thousands of customers. They can include single customers or a range of customers including residential, industrial, and commercial. A single residential microgrid customer may only need 1kW of power. An industrial or combination of customer types can require microgrids that can exceed 10MW. Because of their smaller scale as compared to larger centralized utility scale grids, a single user or even major equipment within a single user’s facility can cause a sudden change in load demand that can compromise the reliability of the microgrid for all users. If the power availability is mismatched with a sudden load demand, a power failure can occur.
Power 101 – The challenge aligning power supply with demand using synchronous gensets
Supply vs. Demand
Load demands and power supply misaligned with sudden load changes
Assuring there’s enough power being supplied to meet a given demand is an obvious requirement. Just as important is matching the ramp-rate of power supplied with the ramp-rates of demand. The industry term for this is called “load matching”. Underpinning having the necessary volume of power to match demand and proper load-matching on an ongoing basis, the gensets using synchronous generation principles must be able to operate at its intended fixed speed to assure power quality always remains inside specifications. When power quality runs outside of specifications, the microgrid can fail or customer facilities will require more energy than necessary and devices can fail prematurely.
The Innovus GridGenius Remote Microgrid Solution
By replacing the management of power from synchronous Engine Controlled Power to Innovus GridGenius controlled power, the engine/prime mover selected no longer dictates the volume of power, ramp-rates for load matching, and quality of power. Engines/prime movers can be selected based on available fuels, lowest emissions and cost of operations. Solar and wind power can be readily integrated and maximized based on each location. No more limits in capacity to control power quality.

The Innovus GridGenius VSG ‘Variable Speed‘ Generator
Innovus Power replaces synchronous control of power with its proprietary GridGenius Energy Center. With this major shift, the engines and the generators they drive can be run at variable speeds that rise and fall depending on the load demand placed on them.
